Many manufacturers have phased out bisphenol A due to evidence of it harming human health. However, another study has shown its replacements to be harmful as well.BPA usage was common in plastics, in products like water bottles, storage containers, food cans, and cash receipts. However, several companies have gone BPA-free. This move was based on research which showed BPA to be a disrupter for endocrine function, interfering with body hormones and leading to adverse health effects.
High BPA exposure has been linked to ADHD, diabetes and obesity levels. However, Melanie Jacobson of NYU stated that not much was known about their substitutes since most research was concentrated on BPA. Replacements have a chemical structural similarity to BPA.
Current lab evidence shows BPA substitutes to promote estrogen-like effects. A study by US EPA found some substitute to be worse than BPA when it came to activating various estrogen receptors. During this study, Jacobson’s group studied bisphenol F and bisphenol S urinary levels in over 1800 US subjects. These chemicals showed a correlation with obesity levels as well.BPF was not detected much in the subjects’ urine. However, when it rose to detectable levels, belly fat levels increased as well.
However, it does not completely prove the substitutes are bad, said Jacobson. No results can be inferred as of now and more research was required for finding if BPA replacements affected weight gain levels.
The findings were published in the JES Journal on July 25. Over 1831 teens and children aged 6-19 took part in the study.
All had high BPA content in urine samples, whereas 55% of subjects had BPF, and 88% of subjects had BPS.As bisphenols are mostly found in various food packaging products, those who had high levels were probably just consuming more processed foods. Jacobson stated that it was quite difficult to distinguish bisphenol effects from diet effects. However, they did find link between obesity and bisphenols.
Research has found that chemicals and diet could interact to wreak greater havoc than the effects usually seen individually. Samara Geller from EWG advised people to eat less processed food amounts & prefer fresh ones; wash hands after one handles paper receipts, prefer dried or frozen foods over any canned foods. Jacobson supported this advice as well.
